| Bus tour to Orlando? |
[13 Nov 2009|06:25pm] |
Hi,
I'm looking for somewhere to go with my brother during the Christmas holidays. I saw this ad in the newspaper for an 8-days direct bus tour (we would sleep in the bus) to Orlando Disney World, the company is "Concorde Tours", the agency is located in Chinatown (I think). It seems a little bit shady so I was just wondering if anyone here dealt with them in the past, or with "Wonder Travel", which looks similar (cheap bus tours, located in Chinatown), and what was their experience. I'm interested in any tips.
Thanks and have a nice weekend!

| Ergonomic Mice |
[13 Nov 2009|10:41am] |
I'm not sure if this will be considered too off-topic or not, but this seems like a good place to ask.
I've been looking to buy some sort of ergonomic mouse to use at work, as my wrist has been bothering me lately. As fellow designers and heavy mouse users, I was wondering what you fine folk consider the best and most comfortable mice for doing your design work.
I don't care too much about fancy bells and whistles (I'm happy as long as there's a decent scroll wheel), and I don't really care if it's cordless or not... although I'm inclined to think that keeping it charged would be a little bit of a hassle, and that the USB receiver some cordless mice use is just another thing to lose/have problems with.
So far I like the looks of the Logitech Performance Mouse MX the best. However, it's almost $100! I was also looking at the Logitech Corded Mouse (M500), although the shape of it doesn't seem quite as ergonomic as the Performance MX.
Then there are some super-ergo mice, like the Evoluent Vertical Mouse, but I think mice like that are a little too weird for me.
I'm going to try to go to a store to see if there are any good mice I can try out in person, but until then, what mice do you use and find comfortable? Are there any steps you take, besides having a good mouse, to prevent hand/wrist pain? Suggestions for good stores to check out are also welcome (Seattle area).
Thanks for suggestions!

| Zelda video |
[13 Nov 2009|12:44am] |
I came across this video on youtube and absolutely loved it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0i8Oy2l0cjo
I can't stop watching it! I had to go play AoL when I was finished watching. :p I would say the video is for age 15+ just for the vulgar language, but if you don't mind that then watch away! Hope you enjoyed it as much as I did. (By the way, he's got other cool videos that I'd recommend watching!)

i checked my grades for the first time ever; i never had grades before! no not in undergrad and not at brown! i have all As. ahahahahaaaaa.
getting grades is really strange. at this point i don't understand why grades matter. for one class, the writing center pedagogy class we all had to take last fall, i wasn't sure, cause some people had been docked points for piddling stupid things; we had to write a dumb paper for the witch professor, and i just took mine and ripped it into tiny pieces and threw it in the trashcan at the bus stop when i got it back, so i didn't know really, but i got an A in that too; whatever. now no one even has to work in the writing center unless they want to, which is much more humane, cause that was a terrible thing about last year. this year is much better. i have lots of time to watch tv and make apple cider and write about watching tv.

| more christmas crafty stuff |
[12 Nov 2009|11:12pm] |
this is some of the other stuff on my christmas crafts to-do list:
3D snowflakes to hang in the windows, maybe from the ceiling in certain spots:
 directions [here]
to put either on the piano, or on the wall where the diningroom table will be. [it's just mini christmas lights poking through canvas.] michaels has alot of their large canvases on sale for 40% off right now, so it's fate!
paper stacking trees [though in much different paper]:
kind of wish i could do them out of fabric instead, but i don't have any fabric to do such a thing! =(
spray painted [probably silver, since that's all i have] branches to hang leftover ornaments:

at michaels, in their 1$ bins, they have these chipboard/cardboard/something albums in different shapes [christmas trees, gingerbread men, snowmen, ornaments, mittens]. i removed the rings that bound the 5 pieces together, spray painted one side silver, and the other side i'll attach scrapbook paper or more paper i've printed on and these will make up the majority of our tree ornaments. [you can buy some of them elsewhere, but they range from 4-7$ an album instead of a dollar.]
some of the album pieces:
[you can see in the bottom shot some of the printed paper i'll be using.]
and these are my favorites as far as the scrapbook papers i'm waiting on:
and that should give you an idea of how much i will not be matchy-matchy this year. honestly, it does make my insides squirm a little, but at the same time, i love those papers so much it doesn't matter as much as it normally would. [plus, i'll probably spend hours pissing everyone off by arranging and re-arranging ornaments so that they are near like colors. however, this is something i do every year regardless (just not usually because of color) so everyone is used to it. sort of.]
And i have these to play with:
Some of those used to be ornaments i made a loooooong time ago, but they are too small for our now large tree, and just got lost on it, so i took them apart. I might end up hanging them from the branches, make small bead garlands for other spots around the house, or.... i dunno, haven't figured it out yet.
Lastly, i was thinking of getting a foam mounted print of this:
It's a shot i took forever ago. Triple exposure with an old argus brick i [obviously] could not get the hang of advancing manually. And if i'm not mistaken, this a shot of the one and only real tree bri and i have ever gotten for christmas. [We jumped the gun, bought it too early, it died, we literally had to shovel all the dead bits out the window, and we went broke having to buy a fake one to replace it, just because it was the first time both our families were coming over for christmas and we just couldn't NOT have a tree. Good times.] Not sure though. If i do get it, it'll probably end up being the most expensive thing we've bought for christmas.
And to finish, this is something I wanted to do but won't be able to:

That would have required buying doilies [would get expensive] or making bri make them, which she doesn't have the time for. Maybe another year.
Sorry for the image heavy post. I'm not excited. Or nuts. No, not at all.

Took a trip down to the local thrift store to look for a new Winter coat because it is freakin' freezing all the freakin' time these days...
So there I am, sifting through the (mostly unfortunate) merchandise, when I come upon the most unfortunate.

UM WHAT IS THAT YOU HAVE THERE COAT?

Oh. Oh no.

| just want to confirm/double check... |
[12 Nov 2009|01:32pm] |
It is illegal for an employer to hold your pay that they owe you because you quit without giving proper notice. I called Normes du Travail and asked, but the lady on the other end was slightly unclear and I fear she didn't entirely understand what I was saying (she kept speaking french to me, I had to ask her three times to speak english so I could properly understand). She said it's illegal and that they have to pay me, but I'm not sure she understood the part where I mentioned I quit without notice. I quit due to personal reasons (psychological/verbal harassment from management and my only co-worker) and had no other choice.
EDIT: thanks for the replies. definitely taking corporate action.

| US stamps |
[12 Nov 2009|12:10pm] |
Does anyone know where I can get a US-issued stamp? I need one ASAP for a self-addressed-stamped envelope I'm sending to the States and short of running to Plattsburg, I am not entirely sure where I can get one. I've asked around at a few Poste Canada outlets but with no luck. :(
Update: Thanks everyone for all your help! I got an International Return stamp (it's more of a slip really) from the post office and I'll just include that with the envelope. A set solution for people wondering the same thing in the future!

| Adult bus tickets on a student card |

I have an Opus student card that expired last month that I cannot renew cause I'm too old now. I know I need to go and buy myself an Opus card so I can actually get a weekly pass next week, but I also know there were some bus tickets on the old Opus card (adult tickets)... Does anyone know if these are still accessible to me, or have they vanished into the ether of the STM's pockets? Do I just use them like I would normally use my pass for the next few days, until they run out, or can the the STM put them on my new adult OPUS card?
I didn't notice anything on the OPUS site, but then I'm so jetlagged today I wouldn't notice if my pants were on fire.
EDIT: It worked with adult tickets on an expired student opus card, in case anyone else ever needs to know this.
